A Mathematical Decision-Support Model Based on Screening Data

Abstract
In the Italian education system, the development of an Individualised Educational Plan (IEP) ensures that educational provision is aligned with students’ profiles of functioning and support needs. Selecting the appropriate IEP requiresconsidering multiple dimensions: cognitive, physical, sensory conditions, emotional and collaborative functioning. To address this challenge, the study introduces a decision-support model that formalises the IEP selection process through a mathematical formula embedded in dedicated AI-powered software. The model is based on a screening questionnaire developed from scientific, medical, educational, and social criteria. Answers are processed by the formula to guide teachers toward the most suitable IEP among the three options within the Italian framework. This paper describes the structure of the questionnaire, presents the mathematical formula, and examines its validity using data collected from a sample of 90 primary and lower secondary school teachers.
